Briggs Nissan Discusses Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
It wasn’t too long ago, back in 2007, that Nissan’s Chairman & CEO, Carlos Ghosn, made a $1.5 million dollar pledge to the Society of Automotive Engineers Foundation (SAE), in an attempt to develop a curriculum to be used for the “A World in Motion” program(AWIM). With the $1.5 million dollar donation the SAE Foundation created four books and teaching guides to intrigue kids, ranging from K-third grade, to read about Science. Science is being pushed heavily by this foundation due to the fact that national statistics show that many children are falling behind and losing interest in science in both the 4th and 5th grades. By making these books, they will hopefully spark interest among a few.
Bob Sump, NTCNA Vice President, stated that, “If we can introduce students to the wonders of science or the usefulness of math in their early years, we may nurture a passion that will stay with them forever. Programs such as this may help encourage more young men and women to pursue careers in science and engineering – careers that are essential for industries like ours.”
At this year’s North American Auto Show, which took place in Detroit, “A World in Motion” held a press conference showing the decline in certain subjects as well as an overall falling in interest in those same subjects. AWIM also used this event as springboard for their four new books/teaching guides, as they were released that day to both Canada and the United States. At the NAAS there were 100 students from a local school, in Detroit, that had the opportunity to read over the books, which are titled; The Three Little Pigs’ Sledding Adventure and the Rocket Age Takes Off to name a few.
